Yuri Fujiyama

Hand pierced silver pendant
silver donated by John Lazos and Associates

I admire traditional art and craft works. I became inspired for this series of works from a traditional Japanese craft technique called sashiko. Sashiko is embroidery that, especially throughout the Edo period, farming women used to patch their clothes at a time when a piece of cloth was considered extremely valuable. I love the attractive, yet delicate look in their simplicity.
I use a 20 tonne power hydraulic press to form the metal. The metal thickness used is about 0.6 millimetres. Therefore each piece is very light and comfortable to wear, and also durable.

Aimee Sutanto

Bamboo Necklace
Sterling silver, Amber

The Artist said " I was pyrophobic for most of my life until 7 years ago when I first studied metalsmithing. I was forced to conquer it and when I did, fire has been my best friend ever since. To me, metal is my language; it is the language that I use to interact with the wearer's body. The conversation that i have with the piece of metal is the one that share with you. Once worn, the piece becomes an autonomous individual and the conversation renewed. When this happens, I smile and move on to a new piece of metal, and start a new conversation."

Daryl Fitzgerald

On the Auction night, we will have Daryl Fitzgerrald's work on the display at Manchester Press.

Daryl Fitzgerald interest in spray painting interest began with an interesting mix of stencils. It was during his architectural studies in London where he was exposed to a wide range of cultural iconography that he was increasingly drawn to Hokusai's prints with their similarities between spraypainting, and woodblock prints.

After starting a little venture in Melbourne, Daryl has created a series of installations that relate to the use of redundant materials, the expression of potential, and their absorption of the past.

After the disasters that have struck Japan he is auctioning two of them to raise money for the Red Cross Disaster Appeal. The installations were based on two of Hokusai's prints from 36 Views of Fuji, with a reference to traditional Japanese literature.

Currently the auction has been happening at an art stall he has at Rose Street Market in Fitzroy.

Kopo

Rabbit
tin alloy

Unlike others, Kopo’s core idea of design isn't about blindly following the mainstream but to honestly transfer idea to product.   However, in such a competitive market, questioning how to win the heart of consumers over big brand product gives us a good impression of the plight of designers.

Kopo's background includes advertising, design and craft making. He spent years experimenting with his own methods which have resulted in a unique collection of work filled with character. He sees himself as a designer rather than a craftsman.

In 1998 Kopo opened his first retail shop in central Taipei. He paid attention to customers ideas and needs and used these discoveries to customise crafts and accessories.  This ability to proficiently  transfer ideas and concepts to actual product is a skill Kopo confidently possesses.

Kopo’s retail shop has had great commercial success with his craft and accessories being worn by celebrities and featured in magazine such as “Man’s uno”, “Vouge Japan “ ,  “ Taipei walk” and etc. Kopo has also been commissioned to design a series of  Terracotta Warriors which have toured Taipei,  as well as some merchandises for a British museum.

Rebecca Kim

Hanafuda Earrings

Rebecca Kim is a Melbourne based jeweller born in Seoul, South Korea.
She studied jewellery making in Tokyo, Japan and continued her studies in Melbourne.

She recognises “design” in all of the objects which are actually found, rather than crafted, and respects the beautiful lines and formations in them.
All of her work starts from re-designing the objects, examining the classic shapes, then re-defining them into new and inventive creations.

These earrings are from her HANAFUDA series.
HANAFUDA are traditional Japanese playing cards originating in Portugal, and developed in Japan from the 17th century.
Hanafuda cards include only pictures and no numbers. The picture represents a seasonal flower, animal, and also an historical episode.
Rebecca says “when I started using Hanafuda for my jewellery I struggle with such a strong and colourful design. Each pattern was designed with a certain story so I tried not to obstruct the original design purpose. I admire the meaning behind the picture, such as a picture of a maple or a deer, which represents autumn.

David Parker

The artist said “I’m committed to making jewellery of the highest standards. I believe the value of my work comes from the design, workmanship and attention to detail I put into the pieces I create.”

Ali Limb

In 2009 Ali sold her share of the business and has returned to making jewellery and studying Shiatsu and further business skills. Ali has served on the board of Craft Victoria and played an active role in Melbourne’s contemporary jewellery scene over the past 2 decades.

Ali finds beauty in the minor details in every day life - everything from a small weed peeking through a crack in the pavement to man made industrial fittings. She enjoys the ceremonial aspect of jewellery and how these traditions can be interpreted into contemporary life. Ali has recently travelled extensively in Japan and was enchanted and inspired by the ceremony and attention given to everyday rituals.

Her jewellery is currently available at e.g.etal in Flinders Lane

Jennifer Martin

Bird with Sapphire crown
Sterling silver, 18ct yellow gold, Australian blue sapphire

Birdcage earrings
Sterling silver

The artist said "I follow the thread of a story, when I make my work. Sometimes it's just a vague memory of something or something I've made up. I'm never quite sure if it's the beginning, the middle or the end or anywhere else in between.
There are fortune telling lovebirds in cages, bells hanging from branched of trees, nightingales singing in the forest, echoes though the mist from the Brothers Grimm, the imprint or lace on skin, forest of coral & seaweed, tall ships & stormy seas, horses galloping. I try to gather up these shadows of narrative & create each handmade piece. I imagine the wearer will have a secret dialogue with the piece, a continuation of the story that has been suggested, like whispers between friends deep in the night... "
